List of Electric Power Generating Stations in Nigeria

The listing of the various Power Stations you can find in Nigeria is given in this post. With their respective location and source of Power.

Electricity Generation and Distribution has been a major issue in Nigeria over several years. Though, some States have really improved in the Power Sector, like Kebbi and Kano State which boast of steady power supply due to the efficacy of the Distribution Companies in these regions.

While some other States in the Federation (Nigeria States), still battle with the inability to supply steady power to her people, like the case of even Niger State, with slogan, Power State, owing to the three most important Power Generating Plant in the Country (Jebba, Shiroro and Kainji) located in Niger State.

Yet it still lags in steady electricity supply to the residents. In the other hand, few other States in the Federation owing to the effectiveness of the distros mentioned earlier had improved considerably in steady supply to the populace.

It is important for us to have an idea of what the Power Generation Sector is like in Nigeria, How Power is Generated from the Power Stations, Amount of Generating Capacity and the Number of Power Stations in the country.

This knowledge will give an idea of where the problem is coming from. And how we can get past the era of no steady power to reliable power supply to the populace.

Thus, the purpose of the post to give a listing of the various power stations in the country, location and their generating capacity.

The Nigerian Power Generation Sector is being controlled by the IPP (Independent Power Producers), Privatised  GenCos (Generation Companies) and Generation Stations under the control of NIPP (Integrated Power Project).

The source of Nigeria Electric Power Generation are from Hydro, Gas Fired, Oil Fired and Coal. With Gas generated Electric Power source around 75%. Which means most of the Power Stations in Nigeria are Gas driven.

Though some proponents were advocating for the use of Nuclear. But, the viability of nuclear power generating plant is still of major debate in the Nigeria system. With mix reactions, thus, Nuclear is yet to be deployed or fully harnessed in the Nigerian system.
